What a Child Car Seat Is For
 8/21/2009  by Kerri

There are many reasons why you should use travel child seats, one being the law, but have you ever wondered what child car seats are for and what they do for your child? Below I have listed a few of the main benefits and reasons for using travel child seats:

• A child car seat is for restraining your child in the car so that they are safe whilst riding in the car.
• Using a car seat will lessen any injuries your child could gain in a crash as it helps to hold your child in place.
• The child car seat absorbs some of the impact in a crash as your child isn’t sitting directly against the car.
• The child car seat will prevent your child being thrown around in an accident as the car seat will hold your child in place in the event of an accident. It is advised to make sure there are not any loose items in the car as those could be flung around the car and could hit your child in the event of an accident.
• A child car seat will make your child more comfortable whilst riding in the car. If they weren’t to use a car seat the seat belt would be cutting into the side of their neck and they may be too small to be held securely in the rear of the car without a child car seat. For those reasons it is the law to use one.

It is recommended that you own a child car seat for your child even if you do not have a car. You never know when you will need to use it. If a friend or member of family, for example, are giving you and your child a lift to the shops etc your child will need to be using the correct restraint. Another example would be in the event of an emergency etc and someone is giving you and your child a lift to hospital then your child should be using the correct restraint. You should make sure you also use the correct restraint for your child in a taxi.

It is against the law not to use a child car seat for your children. Always make sure the car seat you use is suitable for your child’s height, size and weight. Children from birth right up to the age of 12 years old or 135cm tall (whichever they reach first) must use the correct restraint whilst riding in a car. Rear facing seats are the best car seats for infants as they are safer.
