Ways To Get Your Baby To Sleep
 8/21/2009  by Kerri

In the early months babies usually tend to sleep around six hours straight. Most babies will sleep for around 10-12 hours a day by the end of the first year. Below I have listed some proven techniques of how to get your baby to sleep and keep them asleep. Those techniques range from taking your baby out for a drive in their child travel seat to just changing your own attitude towards your babies sleep.

1) Don’t react to every noise your baby makes – small noises should be ignored at night. Your baby will get too used to your attention if you get up at any slight noise they make. Small noises can safely be ignored as babies will rise in and out of heavy and light sleep many times during the night. Remember that if your baby really does need something then you will be sure to know about it!

2) When feeding or changing your baby at night time it should be ‘quiet’ and ‘boring’. There isn’t any need to rock your baby to sleep late at night. If you really need to rock them, then do it rhythmically in a darkish room. Don’t make any playful sounds towards your baby or sing to them as your child may think it’s time to wake up.

3) Babies should take daytime naps every 90mins to 2hours. Each nap should last around 30mins to 2 or 3 hours. Babies should nap in a cot with the general noise and light of daytime. Remember you don’t want your child to nap for a long period of time during the day as they are only taking naps, not a full night’s sleep.

4) One of the simplest ways to send to a baby to sleep at nap time is to rock them gently in your arms. Rocking a baby back and forth is one of the most traditional and effective ways of getting them to sleep.

5) Use blackout curtains in your baby’s bedroom as light can be distracting to them and keep them awake.

6) Buy some lavender spray to perfume your baby’s bedroom. The smell of lavender helps to relax your child and tends to have sedating effects on them.

7) Take your baby out for a ride in the car. Strap them in their child travel seat and go for a drive. The quietness and motion of the car will soon send your baby to sleep.
