Baby Travel Seats - Safety Features
 8/17/2009  by Kerri

Parents usually get confused to which baby car seats are the safest for their child and wonder what all of the safety features are and what they mean. Here I have listed some of the main safety features that you will find on each different baby travel seat:

• Front harness adjustments – This is a mechanism that some child car seats have on the front of the seat which is used to adjust the tightness of the harness. You should only be able to fit one finger space between the harness and the child. If when you do this and there is still space then the harness is too loose.

• 5-point harness – Many experts have agreed that this is the safest type of harness. This type of harness usually gives the best fit and also reduces the risk of the child ejecting from the seat. Our Graco Logico M car seat has a great 5 point harness.

• Seat belt routing path – Some car seats have seat belt route paths which can sometimes make the installation in some vehicles easier. This is when the car seat belt gets wrapped around the back of the car seat in a certain route from one side to the other. This then holds the seat in place.

• Infant car seats with Bases – Most infant carriers can be fitted with bases which are usually installed separately. The base can then be left in the vehicle and the infant car seat can be removed from it and carried in and out of the vehicle. Our Graco Junior Baby Base and our Graco Logico S HP Base are two examples of great quality car seat bases.

• ISOFIX car seat– This is a newer system which allows the child car seats fit without using the cars own seat belts. It uses clips that are attached to your cars own frame. It can make it easier to get a proper fit for your car.

• Wings – Some baby travel seat’s have padded ‘wings’ on each side of the car seat which is great for protecting your child’s head while they are sleeping and would protect them from hitting their head against any hard objects if they were ever in a side or rear impact.

• Recline – Some car seats have built in recline adjustments which is great for helping to get rear facing car seats to a 45 degree angle for newborn babies without having to use rolled up towels etc.

• Head impact protection – Most forward facing baby car seats and rear facing baby car seat’s have a layer of EPS foam or a type of special plastic which can help to improve your child’s safety in side and rear impacts.

• Chest clips (two-piece) – Those can help to reduce the chance of the strap twisting. Those can also be more difficult for the child to detach so would be ideal for a long journey or even short journeys if your child is bad for undoing the buckles.
